LafargeHolcim’s Great Lakes West region produces limestone, sand and gravel, and air-cooled blast furnace slag for a variety of uses - including road construction, steel and steel-related production, agriculture, chemical applications, and ready-mix concrete and asphalt. Materials produced in this region vary greatly in both chemistry and size. Depending on specific need, LafargeHolcim produces a few hundred tons to several million tons of Large Armor stone approximately three feet in diameter, various gradations of rock from 1/4" to 8", and fine sand.
The region also operates a major Construction and Demolition landfill in Lordstown, OH.
Much of the transportation activity in this region takes place on the water. Approximately 14-17 million tons of product is shipped by boat on the Great Lakes. While the majority of products is distributed in Michigan and Ohio, our Great Lakes aggregates are also shipped to Illinois, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and to southwest Ontario, Canada.
The business in the Great Lakes West region operates under both the Lafarge and Aggregate Industries names. It is supported by more than 350 employees who are responsible for four limestone quarries, seven sand and gravel pits, six distribution sites, and the landfill.
The Great Lakes West region has contributed to many projects in the area including the Early Works project (part of the foundation for the upcoming Gordie Howe bridge project), the 401 highway in Southwest Ontario, the I-75 project in East Michigan, the I-271 highway in northeast Ohio and the Michigan Beach project, where sand was provided to re-establish the beach in Indiana.
