Chicago, IL – May 7, 2018 – Aggregate Industries, a subsidiary of LafargeHolcim Ltd, hosted its 20th celebration of Quarry Earth Day at the Travilah Quarry in Rockville, Maryland on Saturday, May 5. An event for the entire community, Quarry Earth Day provided an opportunity for the 1,848 attendees to celebrate and learn more about the quarry, how it operates and the importance of the materials produced at the 330 acre site.
Employees led guided bus tours down into the quarry, during which guests learned about quarry operations. This included everything from how the blasting, crushing, screening and processing methods lead to finished stone products and how these finished products are then used to build roads, provide drainage, and control erosion. The large quarry equipment, a haul truck and a loader were also parked at the event for guests to view and take photos.
“It was great to see everyone in the community come out and participate in Quarry Earth Day. The event was very well run by our local employees and it provided an opportunity for us to make connections with the Rockville community and teach them about what happens at the quarry,” said Guy Edwards, CEO of the US ACM business.
Throughout the event, donations were accepted for the local community library organization, Friends of the Library Quince Orchard Chapter (FOLMC), with more than $60,000 raised as a result of Saturday’s and past Quarry Earth Day events. Additionally, 1,000 tree seedlings were given away to event attendees with help from the local cub scout pack and boy scout troop.
Local community organizations that participated in the event by sharing information and educational materials with community members included:
- Friends of the Library
- Montgomery County Recycling
- Montgomery County Fire & Rescue
- Rebuilding Together Montgomery County
- National Building Museum, Sauls Seismic (seismograph demonstrations)
- Dyno Nobel (Blasting contractor)
